Do You Know How Kidney- Failure People Are Alive Today?
It is due to developments in the medical field, such as dialysis treatments. Dialysis (ล้าง ไต, which is the term in Thai) is a treatment for kidney failure.
Peritoneal dialysis is a type of dialysis that removes waste from the body by using the abdomen. The intestines and other internal organs are wrapped inside the peritoneal lining. The peritoneal lining is the lining inside the abdomen. Continue reading to learn more about peritoneal dialysis, including how it works and what are its types.
What Is The Process Of Peritoneal Dialysis?
Peritoneal dialysis involves injecting fluid into the peritoneum by using a tube. The fluid then absorbs the waste materials and water from the peritoneum.
A tube (catheter) gets inserted into the abdomen and it connects it to a bag of fluid outside the body. The fluid flows in, washes out wastes and excess water, and then flows back out again.
At times, the process of peritoneal dialysis is long and complicated. But it can be easily done at home or the clinic by undergoing a certain procedure. This process is usually done through a tube. The tube is the peritoneal dialysis catheter. The process usually takes continuous in and out cycles to remove the wastes from the body.
Peritoneal dialysis is carried out at home, either while you’re asleep or sitting up.
What Are The Types Of Peritoneal Dialysis?
There are two types of peritoneal dialysis:
- Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) and
- Automated peritoneal dialysis (APD).
The most common type of PD is continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). It’s where you fill your peritoneum with fluid, then drain it out, then refill it again. One can implement this procedure at home or in a clinic. The CAPD procedure is done manually by changing the solution in a bag and removing trash and surplus water.
APD, on the other hand, makes use of an automated machine while you sleep. The machine runs for a set amount of time and drains and fills at periodic intervals.
What Type Of Peritoneal Dialysis Is The Most Effective?
The most efficient dialysis treatment is continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). One can perform this kind of dialysis at home. Though it requires more of patient training and dedication. It has become one of the best ways for kidney-failure people who live far from the dialysis centre.
